A Brief Year-By-Year History of RAP
The main purpose of the organization lies on fostering communication among its members. Liturgies and social gatherings will provide opportunities for keeping in touch. Departed members will be remembered at the annual general assembly. Each member brings unique and diverse talents to the group. Such talents will be recognized and valued within this organization.
Its Origin and Evolution:
On May 15,1990, a group of elementary retired principals from the Dufferin-Peel Roman Catholic Separate School Board met at Sts. Peter & Paul School to discuss forming an association. Those pioneers included Joe Bélanger, Larry Glover, Peter Johnson, Cecile Kendrick, Sr. Anne McCarthy and Paul Patterson. Shortly after the group was expanded to include secondary administrators and Board Office administrative personnel. The first executive of the newly formed Association of Retired Administrative Personnel - R.A.P. were:

1990:
The first event was a memorial Mass in honour of Lou Lucas. The Eucharist was celebrated on June 14, 1990 in the Catholic Education Centre chapel. Father Richard Sheehan, a R.A.P. member, was the Celebrant. On June 19, a picnic was held at the home of Florence & Ralph Hosick on Lake Simcoe. On September 14, R.A.P. members went to Woodbine Racetrack for an exciting evening of horse races and a social.
1991:
The first AGM was held at the Pace Credit Union office in Mississauga. On May 30, as part of Theatre Day at the Shaw Festival, R.A.P. members saw "The Doctor's Dilemma". On October 3, the group went to Manhattan and to Woodbine Racetrack on October 10.
1992:
On April 10, the second A.G.M. was again held at the Pace Credit Union office. On July 8, the cruise on the Trent Waterways and the passage through Big Chute was followed by another picnic at the Hosick home on Lake Simcoe. September was selected as the time for the Annual General Meeting. Father Stan Makacinas was the Celebrant. R.A.P. members went on to Woodbine for the races and a social.
1993:
On May 11, the theatre trip to Stratford, Ontario, included the play "Gypsy ". The A.G.M. was held at the C.E.C. and was preceded by the Eucharist, with Father Stan Makacinas as its Celebrant. The evening included a trip to the Shaw Festival at Niagara-On-The-Lake, to see "St. Joan". An evening at Joe and Micheline Bélanger completed the fall outings. November 22, was an evening at Mohawk Race Track to bet on the trotters this time.
1994:
July 6 was the perfect day for a cruise on "The Sequin" followed by a picnic at the Hosicks. The fourth A.G.M. was held on September 9, at the C.E.C. and included the annual memorial Mass for the deceased R.A.P. members. Bernie Quigley held a corn roast for some R.A.P. members while others went to Woodbine for the thoroughbreds.
1995:
With growing numbers, R.A.P. held its annual Liturgy and A.G.M. in September at the C.E.C. On June 28, Pat & Cecile Kendrick hosted a Murder Mystery Night at their home on Lora Bay.
1996:
The annual trip to the theatre on May 22, to see "Amadeus" in Stratford, was followed by a group dinner. September 17 was selected as the date for the A.G.M. and the Eucharist at the C.E.C. R.A.P. members had lunch at the China Buffet King in Rockwood Mall in Mississauga. On October 6, Jack Ardis took the group for a Sunday walk along the picturesque Bruce Trail near Orangeville. November 9, was Mohawk Racetrack day.
1997:
The A.G.M and the Eucharist were held on September 10, at the C.E.C. Woodbine Racetrack was the next social event.
1998:
The annual meeting and Eucharist were held Wednesday, September 16, at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church and not at the C.E.C., due to the Secondary School strike. Over 50 RAP members were in attendance.
1999:
The annual meeting was held on Wednesday, September 8, at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Slovak Church. Over 60 RAP members were in attendance and 30 members went to Stage West for The Buddy Holly Story. Ed LeMay organized an evening at the horse races and Cecile Kendrick organized the trip to Stratford to see “Fiddler on the Roof”. The monthly breakfasts continued at the Montreal Deli. Bill McNamara continued to develop and update our web site.
2000/01:

On October 6, Hans van den Hoek, Bill McNamara, Ed and Barb Pernu took the group for a Sunday hike in Caledon on October 3. Doug Swailes organized an evening at Mohawk for the horse races on November 13, a trip to Casino Rama was planned for April 8, by Lou Bell. Moira Costello continued to organize the breakfasts. The location was changed to Denny’s on Hurontario.
2002/03:
The annual meeting was held on Wednesday, September 11, at The Catholic Education Centre. Over 85 RAP members were in attendance. The hike this year was led by Judy and Peter Leeney on October 16 at Scotsdale Farm. Doug Swailes organized an evening at Mohawk for the horse races on Tuesday, November 13. The price this year was $26.14 for buffet, program and a $5.00 betting voucher. Moira Costello continued to organize the breakfasts on the first Tuesday of October, December, February, April, June at Denny’s on Hurontario Street.
2003/04:
The annual meeting was held on Wednesday, September 10, at The Catholic Education Centre. About 50 RAP members were in attendance. Judy and Peter Leeney led the hike again, this time at the Glen Haffy Conservation Area. Doug Swailes organized an evening at Mohawk for the horse races and/or casino in November. Moira Costello continued to organize the breakfasts on the first Tuesday of October, December, February, April, June at Denny’s on Hurontario Street. Mike Harding and Mike McDonald organized the Paul Patterson Memorial Golf “Salute to the School Buses” on the opening of school day.
2004/05:
The AGM was held on Wednesday, September 15 at The Catholic Education Centre, with 38 members attending. Judy Leeney led a hike along the Waterfront Trail in Mississauga. Doug Swailes’ night at the races was held at Woodbine, due to renovations at Mohawk. The breakfast location has been changed to Bobby’s Hideaway in Streetsville. A survey was taken to determine a new date for the AGM to accommodate the extended summers of RAP members.
2005/06:
The preferred date for the AGM was during the week after Thanksgiving week. The AGM was held on Wednesday, October 19 with 65 members attending the Mass. A new slate of officers were acclaimed: Denise Panunte, president; Marilynn Childerhose, vice president; Judy Leeney, secretary; Don Pirrie, treasurer. Thank you to Bill McNamara, as past president and secretary. The first day of school ‘Salute to the School Bus’ golf tournament popularity continues to grow, with Mike Harding and Bob McAllister organizing the event. Judy Leeney hosted an October walk in Rattray Marsh and Doug Swailes organized his annual November night at the races at Woodbine. The breakfast gathering location continued at Bobby’s Hideaway every second month.
2006/07:
The Memorial Mass and AGM were held on Wednesday, October 18 at the CEC. It was decided that the donations made for bereavements be increased to $25 to keep in line with inflation. The golf tournament had 32 golfers and 36 for dinner. At the Mohawk Races night, 48 people attended. Breakfasts continue the first Tuesday of every second month. In February and March, RAP members who were staying in the Ft. Myers area also met for breakfast. The June breakfast evolved into a luncheon in Brampton. Walks were scheduled for after the October and April breakfasts in the Streetsville area.
2007/08:
The ‘Salute the School Bus’ golf tournament, followed by dinner at Granite Ridge continues to be a popular first day of school event. Forty members and friends/family attended the race night at Mohawk in early October. The Memorial Mass and AGM were held on Wednesday, October 17 at the CEC, followed by a lunch at Stage West hotel. An additional lunch was held at Stage West in May, as well as the regular breakfast gatherings. February and March breakfasts were again arranged in Florida, with the March date during March Break to accommodate vacationing future RAP members. Our first electronic newsletter was published. New retiree, Rina Berlingieri along with Dom Frasca organized a trip to Italy in October for RAP members, friends, and family. Forty-six people signed on. Judy Leeney led a hike on the escarpment overlooking Granite Ridge Golf Course for retirees and P/VP members during the elementary P/VP golf tournament for non-golfers who would still like to participate in the socialization aspect of the day.
2008/09:
The Paul Patterson Memorial Golf Tournament was again a huge success. A Night at the Races was not scheduled, due to the organizers being occupied with other busy aspects of retired life. Breakfasts were held in Mississauga, Florida, and Rome. A new executive was elected at the October AGM: Marilynn Childerhose - President, Jeff Wild – Vice-President, Claude Arseneau – Secretary/Treasurer, Judy Leeney – Communications Officer. A second trip to Italy for RAP members, family, and friends was offered. Hikers were invited to join Judy Leeney on any of her regularly published hikes on The Bruce Trail. The elementary P/VP golf tournament hike on the escarpment overlooking Granite Ridge Golf Club is once again offered at the elementary P/VP golf tournament in August.
2009/10:
The Paul Patterson Memorial Golf Tournament continues to grow in popularity. Several non-golfers and some spouses joined the group for the dinner after the tournament. In October, the breakfasts were concurrently celebrated in Streetsville and Venice, and in February there was also a breakfast and lunch in Florida. At the AGM in October, Renaud and Pauline Courchesne had invited anyone attending the lunch in Florida to their place afterwards. There were several takers. A trip to northern Italy in early October was again organized by Rina Berlingieri and Dom Frasca. The RAP active membership list is now just over 200.
2010/11:
The Paul Patterson Memorial Golf Tournament once again celebrated the first day of school with wonderful weather on the links. The Mohawk Race Night on October had its largest attendance ever, however, no big winners were announced. For the second year, Fr. Jim Roth was the celebrant for the October Memorial Mass. The executive slate elected at the AGM: Jeff Wild, Kim McNamara, Claude Arseneau, Judy Leeney. Marilynn Childerhose becomes Past President with Jeff Wild as the new President. Progress is slowly being made into accessing retirement information from the Board. Currently, only bereavements are being sent directly to RAP. The breakfast socials continue to attract rowdy crowds.
2011/12:
All of our regular events continue to be very successful. There is an increasing number of non-golfers attending the dinner after the golf on the first day of school. Brendan Barnet joined the executive, replacing Claude Arseneau as secretary/treasurer. All other executive members continued in their positions. For the first time this year, an incentive to pay the yearly fees prior to the AGM in October was offered. Those who submitted fees before the AGM had their names entered to win a receipt for our annual charity. Two names were drawn: Gerri Allen and Don Pirrie. Jeff Wild and Brendan Barnet met with board representatives to explore the possibility of enhanced access to board information for RAP members.
