Organ Donor Awareness- Dufferin-Peel - submitted by Joanne Golla and Marilyn Minnick
The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us: “The transplant of organs is morally acceptable with the consent of the donor and without excessive risks to him or her” and describes organ donation as “...a noble act.”
One Dufferin-Peel administrator is waiting for the Gift of Life. Shirley Kendrick was principal of All Saints, Assistant S.O/S.O. supporting students with diverse learning needs before moving to the Ministry of Education as Director of Curriculum, Director of Supports for All and finally as Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM) for Student Support and Field Services Division.
She needs a life-saving liver and kidney transplant. This post was created by a few close friends of Shirleys in January 2020, with the intent of raising awareness about living donors and registering as a donor. Shirley is a life-long learner, teacher and mentor for diverse leaders. She is known for her love of learning and teaching and her sense of humour. Shirley has devoted her life to supporting others, especially students with diverse learning needs. Shirley's family has a long line of leadership in education. Her grandmother was a Principal. Her mom, Cecile, a retired principal with Dufferin-Peel, was a founder and first president of RAP. She contacted the Director, Brian Fleming, who gave his support to Cecile and RAP. The annual Mass held at the CEC was their first project: one that continues today. We are reaching out to the members of the RAP group started so many years ago, to help support organ donor awareness for one of our own.Shirley has been on the combined cadeveric transplant list for a little over a year now and her health is deteriorating. She is currently on Long Term Disability. We want to see her well.
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected many elements of health care and organ donation is no exception. With surgeries being cancelled, most transplants were also placed on hold. One report out of Ottawa indicated that they would typically complete two transplants per day. Sadly, due to lack of donors and hospitals close to or at capacity, they were reduced to three transplants over two weeks. This amounts to 11 people not receiving a life saving transplant over a two week period. We need to do what we can to create awareness and increase registration for organ donation.
How can you help?
1. Spread the word! Please share this post so it reaches as many people as possible.
2. Consider being a living donor. A living donor must be over the age of 16, in good health and willing to freely donate. If you, or someone you know is interested in becoming a living donor, select uhn.ca online and under Programs choose Ajmera Transplant Centre. Complete the Living Donor History Form found under Living Donor Program. Currently 1,600 people are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. Shirley is just one of them.
3. Another way you can help is to register to be a donor at beadonor.ca. Registration only takes two minutes and can save up to 8 lives. Currently only 34% of people in Ontario are registered donors. Many think they are donors but haven’t verified to confirm that they are registered.
4. If you would like to make a donation to support the the Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation to support research, education and the enhancement of patient care within the Ajmera Transplant Centre at UHN contact tgwhf.ca. All donations are tax deductible.
Finally, please spread the word about organ donation. It is one Gift that can save so many lives.
If you’d like to send a message, Shirley’s gmail address is teach2learn2x@gmail.com and most importantly, prayer is always appreciated.
Thank you for your time! May God bless RAP and their good works.
