The Roots Of RAP
By: Cecile Kendrick, retired Principal, St. Timothy (11/10/2007)
The seeds of the Dufferin-Peel Retired Administrative Personnel group (R.A.P.) were sown in April 1990. Five administrators (Larry Glover, Cecile Kendrick, Ed LeMay, Sr. Anne McCarty, and Paul Patterson) were welcomed to Sts. Peter and Paul School by then principal Len Barreca.
A number of Dufferin-Peel administrators had discussed the need to remain connected with our colleagues and to keep the Dufferin-Peel network alive. A significant priority for the group was that, as Catholic educators, we wanted to have an annual Mass to celebrate in community. Lou Lucas was recently deceased and the group decided that, in memoriam, we would honour our deceased colleagues annually.
The early years included regular quarterly meetings. As first president of R.A. P., it was my privilege to be part of the talented founders who developed and maintained this group. Our first vice president was Paul Patterson, Ed LeMay was treasurer, and our secretary was Larry Glover. Frank Dunn was a retired comptroller of Dufferin-Peel and he generous shared his gifts early on to ensure that the finances of the organization were appropriately maintained and managed.
Over time, Director of Education, Brian Fleming, invited the R.A.P. group to the new C.E.C. for Mass in the chapel and the annual meetings followed. Our frequent Celebrant was Fr. Sheehan C.S.B., retired principal of St. Paul’s.
For over eight years, the group engaged in a number of social activities including an annual trip to Stratford, an annual trip to Woodbine Race Track, day trips including picnics, visits to summer homes, and even a trip to New York City in the early 1990s.
Like the mustard seed, we started small! The roots of our group have continued to grow as witnessed in the most recent Mass on Oct. 17th. This Eucharistic celebration included honouring recently deceased colleagues and our beloved predeceased. As well, on this day, Director of Education, John Kostoff, agreed to ensure that names of our deceased colleagues will now be permanently etched in the leaves of the Vine of Remembrance at the C.E.C. chapel.
The roots of R.A.P. go deep and we have been blessed by the support of many administrators over time. Under the leadership of the professional Executive of 2007 (Denise Panunte: president, Marilynn Childerhose:vice president, Don Pirrie: treasurer and Judy Leeney: secretary), R.A.P. will, no doubt, continue to blossom.
